Ordiances
-
An outward symbol of an inner reality
At Redding Christian Fellowship, we believe that God ordained two ordinances to be observed by Christians. One of these is baptism. In the New Testament, conversion and baptism were closely linked. When Jesus issued His “marching orders” to His disciples, He told them to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as they went to make disciples of all nations. The book of Acts demonstrates that as people came to faith in Christ, they were promptly baptized. As one writer has noted, the idea of an unbaptized believer is foreign to the New Testament.
While we recognize that the Church over the centuries has come to various understandings about both the mode and the meaning of baptism, our conviction is that baptism is an outward symbol of an inner reality. That is, at the point of salvation, a person dies to the old way of life and becomes a new creation, with a new purpose and a new destiny. Water baptism by immersion symbolizes this reality.
In our understanding, the preferred mode of baptism is immersion. The most accurate definition of the transliteration of the Greek word baptizo is “to immerse.” Furthermore, full immersion best represents the fact that a believer is presenting himself or herself as a person dead to the old way of life, in a sense buried with Christ, and then rising from the water to symbolize a resurrected life in Christ.

Proclaiming the Lord’s death until He comes.
We believe that a second ordinance to be observed by the Church is what is often called, “Communion”, or “the Lord’s Supper”. Our understanding is that this ordinance is primarily a memorial. It was instituted by Jesus when He celebrated the Passover meal with His disciples just prior to His arrest and subsequent crucifixion. He told them to do this in remembrance of Him. When this practice was abused in the Corinthian church, Paul wrote to correct these abuses and to remind the church of the meaning of the Lord’s Supper. He repeated the words of Jesus who took bread and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Regarding the cup, Jesus said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup. You proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”There has been debate over the centuries as to the efficacy of the spiritual impact of Communion. We believe it is not salvific. That is, we do not believe that God imparts a measure of grace to the participant in the Lord’s Supper. Salvation cannot be earned by appropriate observances. Salvation is a gift God imparts to those who come to Him in faith and recognize that the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ is the basis for redemption. Salvation is never achieved through works or observances and practices on the part of people. We prefer to refer to both baptism and the Lord’s Supper as ordinances, in large measure for this reason. To refer to them as sacraments tends to suggest that they could be a means of grace. We practice these two ordinances out of obedience and gratitude for God’s gift of salvation; not to earn it.

We believe that formal membership is important for several reasons.
Church Membership at Redding Christian Fellowship
Should someone “join” a church, and what does it mean? While some Christians assume attendance equals membership, formal membership in the early Church is only hinted at in Scripture. At Redding Christian Fellowship, we encourage individuals and families to officially join, though everyone is always welcome at our services.
Formal membership is important for several reasons:
Commitment: Membership is a tangible way to demonstrate dedication to Christ, His Church, and its mission.
Accountability: Scripture teaches that we are accountable to God and to one another. Membership reflects a willingness to submit to church leadership and ministry.
Community: Membership fosters connection, helping believers grow and serve together rather than in isolation.
Order and Governance: Membership helps conduct church business decently and in order, ensures accountability, and supports legal requirements for incorporated churches.
A practical first step is attending a Discover Class, offered multiple times a year during Sunday services. This class covers the church’s values, mission, leadership, finances, service opportunities, and operations—providing a helpful introduction to membership and involvement.
Declaration of Faith

We believe in one living and true God, eternally existing in one essence and in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Each is equal in divine perfection, yet each remains distinct in relation to the others.Scripture References:

We Believe
We believe in God the Father, who is infinite, personal, and perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love. He foreknows all that shall come to pass, mercifully concerns Himself with the affairs of humanity, hears and answers prayer, and saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.Scripture References:

We Believe
We believe in the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit indwells every believer, serving as our abiding, personal Helper, Teacher, Comforter, and Guide.Scripture References:

We Believe
We believe that humankind was created by God in His own image. All have sinned and thereby incurred physical, spiritual, and eternal death, which is separation from God. As a result, all humans are born with a sinful nature and are sinners by choice, under righteous condemnation. Those who confess their sins, repent, and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit, made new in Christ, delivered from condemnation, and granted eternal life.Scripture References:
Genesis 1:26; 2:17; 3; 5:2; Psalm 51:5; Proverbs 28:13; Jeremiah 17:9; John 1:12-13; 3:16; 5:24; 8:12; Romans 3:10-23; 5:19; 8:1; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; Titus 3:4-8; James 1:14; 1 John 1:9; Revelation 19:3; 20:10,14-15 -
We Believe
We believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the Head and all regenerated persons are members. We also believe in the local church, a community of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized upon a credible profession of faith, and joined together for worship, service, and fellowship. God has entrusted the members of the local church with the primary task of making disciples of Jesus Christ.Scripture References:
Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 2:42; Ephesians 2:19-22; 4:11-16; 5:19-21; Colossians 1:18; Hebrews 10:23-25 -
We Believe
We believe that Christ followers are called to glorify God by fearing the Lord, loving God above all else, loving others as ourselves, serving God rather than mammon, and obeying His commandments.Scripture References:
Exodus 20:1-18; Psalm 119; Proverbs 1:7; Matthew 6:24; 22:37-39; 2 John 1:6 -
We Believe
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has entrusted two ordinances to the local church: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the triune God. The Lord’s Supper was instituted by Christ to commemorate His death and anticipate His return. These ordinances are to be observed and administered until Christ returns.Scripture References:
Matthew 28:18-20; Luke 22:14-20; Romans 6:3-5; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 -
We Believe
We believe that every believer has a direct relationship with God and is ultimately responsible to Him alone. Redding Christian Fellowship is independent and free from any unwarranted interference by ecclesiastical or political authority.Scripture References:
Romans 14:1-23; 1 Timothy 2:5 -
We Believe
While Redding Christian Fellowship is an autonomous, independent congregation with no denominational affiliations, we actively cooperate with other congregations and organizations that seek to advance the cause of Jesus Christ.Scripture Reference:
Ephesians 4:1-16 -
We Believe
We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to establish His kingdom. We affirm the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the eternal joy of the righteous, and the everlasting punishment of the wicked.Scripture References:
